about EHI

Where science, culture, and community come together to shape the future of ethnic haircare.

The Ethnic Haircare Institute (EHI) was born from a simple but powerful idea: African hair deserves solutions built on truth, science, and lived experience. And the people designing those solutions deserve the right knowledge to do it well.

Our journey began in Soweto, where Seipati Makote and Lesenyeho Masitenyane, two passionate entrepreneurs with a shared love for personal care, founded Tsebo Manufacturing and Technical Services in 2015. Their vision was clear — to help companies understand African consumers through market research, technical insight, and culturally intelligent thinking.

Over the years, Tsebo expanded into a trusted partner for both local and international clients, completing more than 50 consumer projects and engaging over 2,000 respondents across the African market. This experience built the foundation for EHI — a sister institution dedicated specifically to ethnic and textured haircare education.

As trends shifted and the ethnic haircare category grew, companies needed more than consumer data — they needed real, evidence-based understanding of African hair, Black women’s routines, textured hair biology, and cultural hair practices.
